There has been significant growth in interest in healing over the last 15 to 20 years, contributing to Reiki's global dissemination. When information finally came out of Japan in the late 1990s about Dr. Usui's true history and the healing system he founded, as well as about previously unknown techniques, it caused great upheaval in some Reiki communities, as it called into question their assumption that what they were offering was "traditional Reiki."
The issue is perhaps much more perplexing today since "new" Reiki healing systems are constantly being established, most of which are based on Usui Reiki but include new symbols, alternative attunement processes, and a slew of new concepts. Add to this the assertions that one system is "better" than another and the counterclaims that other systems "simply don't work," and it becomes very difficult to sift through the trash and determine what each system has to offer.
Because the term Reiki may apply to any healing energy in Japanese, most of these new healing systems utilize the term to identify themselves—and, presumably, to capitalize on the reputation of the original Usui Reiki, which is now well recognized in practically every country.
