The Lymphatic System

Like blood circulation, the lymphatic system's tubes branch out throughout the body, much like the arteries and veins that carry blood. The lymphatic system transports a colorless fluid known as 'lymph.'
The term "lymph" refers to a milky bodily fluid that contains a type of white blood cell known as "lymphocytes," as well as proteins and lipids. Outside the blood vessels, lymph seeps into the crevices between bodily tissues and is held in the "lymphatic" system until it can be reintroduced into the bloodstream. The body can eliminate the products of cellular breakdown and bacterial invasion by the flow of blood in and out of arteries and veins and through lymph nodes, and into the lymph.
Two extremely large areas are significant in this system: the right lymphatic duct, which drains lymph fluid from the upper right quadrant of the body above the diaphragm and down the midline, and the thoracic duct, a structure approximately sixteen inches long located in the mediastinum of the pleural cavity and draining the remainder of the body. Our body is able to combat infection and ward off an invasion from foreign invaders due to the functions of this system, which includes the spleen, the thymus, lymph nodes, and lymph ducts.
Lymph is critical for the immune system and the absorption of fats from the intestines. Wherever there are blood vessels, lymphatic vessels exist and transfer extra fluid to the end vessels without the assistance of any "pump" action. They serve as infection barriers by filtering out and eliminating poisons and bacteria. The spleen contains the highest amount of lymphoid tissue in the human body.
